Who are you going to invite?

We are a go and tell church, not a wait and see church. Remember! We heard last Sunday that Jesus went into Galilee to preach the good news. He didn't wait for people to come to him. He did not take the passive approach, but took the initiative to go to them. This took boldness and courage, but he was going to live out loud the purpose and the mission that he came to this earth for.

The story in first chapter of Mark goes on to say that he invited Simon Peter and Andrew to come and follow him. A bit later he does the same with James and John. He extended the invitation to them to come and experience something more than fishing for fish, but to follow him and become fishers of men. Talk about going from the mediocre to something that was meaningful!

In the next couple of months, we want to give you the opportunity to go and invite. We have some exciting things on the horizon at Lord of Life. The first opportunity to extend an invitation will be on Saturday, February 21 when will be showing "Fireproof" the movie at Lord of Life. It is an excellent movie about "fireproofing" your marriage. This is an event for couples. The cost for Lord of Life couples is $20 and includes the movie, popcorn, drinks, and the Love Dare 40 Day Devotional Challenge Guide. However, the event is free to any friends you might invite.

Beyond that, not too far around the corner, is Easter. I want to encourage you today to start considering and praying for 3 other people to invite to Easter services. Start praying now for the opportunity you to ask them and for God to open their hearts to be open to the invitation.

I know we all have three people who we can invite. If you don't know who they are, ask that God will reveal them to you. I am sure that he will.

On Easter Sunday this year we will be extending a One Month to Live Challenge to everyone. We will challenge everyone in attendance on that day to live the next month as if it were their last. It is sure to transform the way we live an the way we gather as a church.

Whether it is extending an invitation, sharing the gospel, offering to pray for someone, extending an act of generosity or kindness to another person - ask yourself: "how can I go and tell?"

For Such a Time as This

I hope that you were encouraged this last weekend as much as I was. What a wonderful celebration. It was great to bring together the past, the present, and the future as we continue to look forever forward to Jesus.

In my weekly email this week, I wanted to affirm Pastor Rische’s message from last Sunday. I must say that I am honored, proud, and overwhelmed to build this church upon the foundation that was laid some 20 years ago.

Three important keys from Pastor Riche’s message (To Be a Congregation that is “Forever Forward” Takes Three Key Connections) for us to remember as we continue to move forever forward are that:

1) No one is going to be reached until God shows up. Jesus must be a part of everything we do. Fervent and persistent prayer are critical. We must first talk to God about the lost before we talk to the lost about God.

2) It’s “go and see” instead of “wait and see.” The people living in the Fox Valley do not exist to fill Lord of Life Church. Instead, the people of Lord of Life exist to fill the Fox Valley with Jesus Christ. Reaching others requires sacrifice, but the greater the sacrifice the greater the impact.

3) We need to work together as a team. We are not always going to agree with each other. Sometimes we might say or do something to offend one another. But we are the Church! God has forgiven us in an incredible way and so we practice forgiveness with each other. Our differences + unity = addition and multiplication. The opposite is that our differences + disunity = subtraction and division.

Time is precious and limited. And I believe that God has brought us to this place and this congregation for such a time as this. Today, I am more proud and excited to be the Pastor of Lord of Life than I have ever been.

If you would like to listen again to the message from last Sunday you can listen here:

Praying for Our Leaders

I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior . . . 1 Timothy 2:1-3

Holy Habits, Wholly Living

Train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. 1 Timothy 4:7-9

Ash Wednesday, February 25, begins the season of Lent. During the Lenten season we will be examining holy habits that enable us to wholly live. Another name for these holy habits are called the spiritual disciplines.

Spiritual disciplines are essential for growth in our Christian faith. They are tools that God gives to us. But unless a tool is used, it serves no purpose. We will work to discover how to best use these tools in a significant way and enable us to more fully live for the Lord.

Practicing the spiritual disciplines make a tremendous difference in our lives. On the surface it might seem that practicing these disciplines would restrict our lives and put constraints on our time. But the reality is that the disciplines are given to us to free us. The disciplines help raise us above the constraints of this world to taste the unlimitlessness of God.

Discipline is important in every aspect of our lives. Maybe you have heard it said, “you can pay now and play later, or you can play now and pay later.” There is much truth in that statement. Living a disciplined life may be difficult in the moment, but there is much reward that accompanies it.

I pray that you will practice the discipline of worship and join us for our new message series - Holy Habits, Wholly Living. This new message series begins on Sunday, February 22 where we will discuss an ancient discipline that is often lost in the modern world. That is the discipline of fasting.

Today is the Day

Happy Birthday Lord of Life! The big Two Zero! 20 years ago this exact day Lord of Life held its first worship.

So much has changed since then - not only at Lord of Life, but in the world as well. What was the world like in 1989? Well, Ronald Reagan was president on January 15 and a few short days later George Bush, Sr. would succeed him. It was the year of the Exxon Valdez oil spill. It was the year of the Tienanmen Square protests. San Franscisco was rocked by a major earthquake. Pete Rose was banned from baseball. The Berlin Wall was torn down. I was still in High School. Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls had yet to win a championship and the Chicago Cubs were still practicing futility.

We didn't know then what Lord of Life would look like 20 years later, but through it all, God was there. There have been good times. There have been not so good of times. There have been times of abundance. There have been times of famine. There have been joys and there have been sorrows.

People have come. People have gone. People have comeback and still others have passed on to glory. Some have fallen away and we pray them to come back to Jesus. Others have come to Jesus for the very first time. As the writer of Ecclesiastes shares there is a time for every activity under the sun.

An anniversary is a time to look back, but even more so it is a time to look forward. The theme for this anniversary is forever forward. It is based upon Hebrews 12:1-3 where we are told to fix your eyes upon Jesus, the author and perfector of our faith. We can look forward. We can look backwards, but always we will look to Jesus.

Our hope, our provision, our glory, our forgiveness, our memories, our stories, our mission, our lives all belong to Jesus. So to Him be all the glory for great things he has done.

Please join me in praying for the celebration this weekend. I am praying that it will be a joyful time and a time to unite us new and old in Jesus Christ. I pray it will be a weekend that Jesus will be lifted high and a weekend to move us forward in mission.

We have almost 350 people RSVP'ed for the dinner and a great worship planned. Hope to see you there.

The First Gathering

In September of 1988 the first gathering of Lord of Life Church took place when 23 people met in a home in rural St. Charles to discuss the start of a new church.

A History of Lord of Life

I spent a little time today compiling a history of Lord of Life Church. Here is what I found:

Lord of Life Church was birthed out of a partnership that was formed by St. Mark’s Lutheran in St. Charles, Faith Lutheran in Geneva, and Immanuel Lutheran in Batavia.

A new seminary graduate, the Rev. Scott F. Rische, was called by the Northern Illinois District of Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod to serve as a mission developer in a yet to be determined location. On July 17, 1988 Pastor Rische was commissioned at St. Mark’s Lutheran to begin his work.

The first gathering of Lord of Life took place when 23 children, youth, and adults gathered in the home of Dave and Lynn Kaufmann in a rural community west of St. Charles in early September 1988 for the purpose of beginning a new ministry in this area.

Under the leadership of Pastor Rische, the fellowship gatherings soon grew to more than 50 as these early leaders witnessed to the community through door-to-door visitation, making phone calls, putting up posters around the community, and inviting their friends and family members.

The new church planned for it’s first public worship service to be held at Wasco school on January 15, 1989. It was decided that the format of the church would be a compromise between traditional and contemporary worship. Pastor Rische shared in an interview with a local newspaper that he’d like the church to attract “people who don’t feel they’ve found a church they are comfortable with. Even through their are a lot of churches (in the area) not every one is going to church.”

Providing Sunday worship services at Wasco School appeared, at times, to be truly “servant’s work”! The enormous task of creating a worship center in the gymnasium of Wasco School each and every Sunday for almost five years was challenging but served to bond the committed and faithful servants who unfolded and folded hundreds of chairs, set and unset the altar, disconnected and reconnected the sound system, and carried in and carried out every single item necessary for the administration of Sunday School, Bible classes, nursery care, and worship services. This challenge of recreating God’s house every Sunday was met with enthusiasm and amazing fortitude. The lasting symbol from this era was the “infamous” horse trailer owned by Jim and Barb Krage that would be used to transport all the altar, pulpit, and other supplies for Sunday Services.

Before its one year anniversary Lord of Life was averaging 140 people in worship and 80 in Bible Class. Plans were being made to expand to two worship services and to build a new church building on the corner of LaFox Rd and Route 38.

On October 28, 1990 Lord of Life celebrated “Charter Sunday” when it was officially received as a member of the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod as a church. It had been previously identified as a “mission.”

That same month a building committee was formed, chaired by Bob Kessler. A capital steward program “All Building for One, One Building for All,” (aka: ABOOBA) was kicked off in October 1991 and was met with tremendous enthusiasm and faith. On July 26, 1992 a groundbreaking was celebrated at the site and construction began in September that year. Because their faith in God and belief in His promise to honor their sacrifices, the permanent church home of Lord of Life became a reality when the first worship service was held at the corner of LaFox Rd and Route 38 on November 21, 1993.

In September 1994, Lord of Life Preschool opened its doors for the very first time calling Marliss Laughridge to serve as director. Four teachers and four aides were hired to serve the new preschool with capacity of 141 students. Lord of Life preschool continues still today as an important ministry of Lord of Life.

Lord of Life continued to expand and on April 30, 1995 a second pastor was added to the staff when Pastor Barry Kolb was installed as Associate Pastor. It was not long after when on May 26, 1996 when Pastor Rische said farewell after accepting a new Call to First Lutheran Church in El Cajon, CA.

Under the leadership of Pastor Kolb Lord of Life began a new capital campaign called Extending the Light to retire the debt having been incurred from the previous building campaign and purchase of the property.

In January 2003 another capital campaign was started called “Building God’s Ministries” for the purpose of expanding the original church building. On March 23, 2003 the voter’s approved the construction of a new “Family Life Center” and June 12, 2005 the first worship was held in the new building expansion that had tripled the size of the existing building.

On February 15, 2004 a congregational meeting was held to call Pastor Phil Ressler as Associate Pastor. In March 2008, we said farewell to Pastor Kolb after having received and accepted a call to First Lutheran Church in Texarkana, TX. And in May 2008 Pastor Ressler was installed as Senior Pastor of Lord of Life.

Today, Lord of Life continues to strive to be faithful to the Great Commission and the Great Commandment. We continue to reach out to the unchurched population of our community with the gospel of Jesus.

Our Mission
We are Lord of Life church, people united through faith in Jesus Christ. As God's people, we are committed, as He directed, to growing in faith, fellowship & love for one another. We offer people exciting new challenges and opportunities to become active, vibrant & vital participants in the ministry of this congregation. It is our mission to proclaim the Gospel of salvation, so that all people, everywhere, might find forgiveness, reconciliation & a new life in Christ.

Set Up and Take Down

One thing that has not changed from the beginning is setting up and taking down chairs. Whether it was Wasco School, the original church building, or the new Family Life Center we have set up and taken down a lot of chairs.

Big Events

We have two big weekends coming up at Lord of Life. This coming weekend Carl Kerby will be with us from Answers in Genesis (www.answersingenesis.org). He will be speaking on Sunday morning about the relevance of Genesis today. Two further presentations on Sunday evening are called: "Fossils - Friend or Foe" and "Racism - the Biblical Answer."

Here is a bit of Carl's biography:

Carl Kerby, who is one of AiG’s most dynamic lecturers on the book of Genesis, is a founding board member of AiG (1994). He is also considered the "father" of AiG’s highly popular and acclaimed website, which is now recognized as one of the most-visited religious websites in the world (with up to 94,000 visits/343,000 page views per day!) and which won the prestigious "Website of the year" award in 2006 by the 1,400-member National Religious Broadcasters.

Carl’s passion is to proclaim the authority and accuracy of the Bible, and he does so in a highly effective way for all audiences. He is much in demand as a speaker to both young people and adults, with some of his popular talks being available as DVDs, These include: Racism: Is There an Answer?, What Is the Best Evidence That God Created?, and Genesis: The "Bottom Strip" of the Christian Faith. He is also one of the presenters in the award-winning DVD series for teens called "Demolishing Strongholds," which received the 2008 Gold Crown Award for "Best Youth Film."

In addition, Carl is the author of Remote Control and is a contributor to the book War of the Worldviews. He is currently writing a semi-autobiographical book of his life ("No Holds Barred") as the son of a famous professional wrestler and the unique challenges he faced growing up-and how God delivered him from that strange world to eventually become part of the international apologetics ministry of AiG. A former air traffic controller at Chicago’s busy O’Hare International Airport, Carl’s thrilling testimony has been shared in churches throughout America and many overseas (including Japan, where he has spoken in several churches).

And of course on January 17 and 18th we will be celebrating the 20th Anniversary. Over the past week I have been posting pictures on my blog from the past 20 years. Make sure to check it out. If you have not registered for the dinner yet, make sure to R.S.V.P. at www.lolchurch.net.

I am really looking forward to these next two weekends. I hope you are two. Please join me in praying that God will use these two events in a powerful way. Pray for the opportunities to invite friends and family and others to come. Pray for this to be a time of encouragement for all of us. Pray that we would be edified through our special guest speakers.

I know that 2009 is going to be an incredible ride. It's great to have you on the journey.

Curt Berg

Curt Berg is our longest serving staff member. In fact, Curt has served on staff longer than anyone else in the history of the church.

Here is what Curt says about Lord of Life:

I love Lord of Life because of the people and their ability to point me to GOD through Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit. Whether it's Pastor Phil, my co-workers, or the many folks that make up the body of Christ at Lord of Life I do love this place! I also love it because people show their love to me even when I don't deserve it, AND I love it because eventhough they don't deserve it I still love them too! It's a place where I can forgive others as they forgive me and we still don't mind each other's company. It's great when unity reigns and we feel the harmony only the love of GOD can sing.

Pastor Kolb called to Lord of Life

In 1996 Pastor Kolb was called to Lord of Life to serve as Associate Pastor. In 2008 he moved on from Lord of Life after receiving a new call to First Lutheran in Texarkana, TX. After 12 years as Associate Pastor and then Senior Pastor at Lord of Life, 2008 was a big year of transition.

We are excited that all three pastors who have served at Lord of Life will be present during the Anniversary Celebration.

Ground Breaking of First Building

I don't have an exact date on this ground breaking ceremony. Here is a note from Bob Kessler explaining some of the events that surrounded this ceremony. Bob who is pictured in the last picture served as Building Committee Chairman and is currently the Chairman of our Board of Elders.

I didn't find the groundbreaking date, but I did run across some other dates-

On June 10, 1990 the Voter's Assembly had an extensive discussion on the need to form a Building Committee. It had already been approved by the Executive Committee to bring before the congregation a proposal to create a Building and Planning Committee. There was some confusion on the duties and organization of the committee, but a motion to allow the Executive Committee to form a Building and Planning Committee was passed unanimously.

On November 19, 1990 a letter from the Building and Planning Committee was sent to the congregation to introduce the newly formed seven member committee.

On Sunday December 8, 1991 the leaders of the congregation met at the Galleon Restaurant (now called St Charles Place) to give an advance pledge to the ABOOBA (All Building for One, One Building for All) campaign during a special dinner. I believe the following Sunday, December 15, was the congregation's first opportunity to join the three year $500,000 fundraiser.

My best guess is that the groundbreaking took place in September 1992, maybe on the 13th or 20th, but it's just a guess.

Hope that helps.

Pastor Scott Rische Commissioned

Reve. Scott Rische was commissioned at St. Mark's Lutheran Church on July 17, 1988 as a missionary and church developer for a not yet developed new Lutheran-Church Missouri Synod congregation. Rische's congregation is planned for an undecided location in St. Charles and Geneva area.

Ordination

A little bit of the history of Lord of Life that took place, but no one really realized at the moment. This is a picture of my ordination on June 4, 2000 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Belvidere, IL. Little did we know that both Pastor Barry and I would serve as pastors at Lord of Life. Pastor Barry had served as Pastor of Immanuel when I was growing up and confirmed me when I was in 8th grade.
